The capital of Gangtok is the most popular destination which falls under the East Sikkim District. The Eastern part of Sikkim is one of the most popular and most visited areas within Sikkim. Gangtok' is situated at an elevation of 5,480 feet above sea level and it experiences a temperate climate throughout the year. Gangtok is a premier tourist spot in North-Eastern India which offers a variety of exciting options for a great experience and a perfect vacation. Gangtok city overlooks the Ranikhola river which meanders in the valley below the city. The snow-clad Mount Kanchenjunga and its ranges can be seen from the east of Gangtok city. The East Sikkim district happens to be rich in cultural aspects and traditional varieties which make it a great destination among the four districts of Sikkim, which is the best destination for the cultural activities. East Sikkim has quite a number of tourist destinations which hold great importance for the tourists with various types of interests.

Places of Tourist Interest

Tsomgo Lake

Also known as Changu Lake which is a glacial lake in Sikkim. It is located at an altitude of 12,310 feet. Tsomgo means 'Source of water'. It is situated at 35kms from Gangtok city at steep route called as Jawaharlal Nehru Road which leads all the way to Nathula Pass. It is one of awesome high altitude lakes all over in India. It is doubly attractive with the reflections of the surrounding hills. The altitude rises to about 10,000 ft in just 15kms.

Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple

Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple is situated between Nathula and Jelepla pass. An altitude of 13,123 ft and about 52kms from Gangtok. It is known as Baba Mandir. Visitors can cover this temple along with a visit to Nathula Pass or Tsomgo Lake.

Nathula Pass

It was a corridor of passage between India and Tibet. Located around 56 km from Gangtok with an altitude of 14450 ft, whereas the road to Nathula passes through the Tsomgo lake. It is the highest motorable roads overall world and it's highly surrounded by alpine flora. Hence, tourists are allowed to go near to the international border from where you can easily see Chinese soldiers on the other side of the border.

Enchey Monastery

The meaning of Enchey Monastery is the solitary temple. It is almost 200 years old and it is situated 3 km northeast of Gangtok. The monastery belongs to the Nyingma in order of Vajrayana Buddhism. The area was blessed by Lama Drupthob Karpo. The people of that place believe that a small Gompa was invented by him after which he flew from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim to over the site. Again the Monk has built a small hermitage at the site of the monastery when he came here flying from Maenam Hill in South Sikkim.

Flower Show Complex

March is the month of flower festival starts with Orchids show and in this period competitions are held in a different section. And Gangtok is the place for Flower show. This show attracts a large number of tourist as well as locals and also visitors daily. A similar festival is also held at Namchi, and other places of South Sikkim every year.

Directorate of Handlooms and Handicrafts

It is located in a convenient place at 'Zero' Point in the capital city. The handloom and handicraft items generally produced in the state are beautifully showcased. These are handlooms, carpets, thanka paintings, wooden carved and wooden masks, painted items, traditional hats and caps, cane and bamboo works, staff dolls, multi-craft items and embroidered products.

Do-Drul Chorten, Deorali

This huge monument is situated at a short walking distance from the Research Institute of Tibetology on a hillock. Available car or taxi will drop at the base from where a short but steep uphill pathway which leads to the stupa. It is known as a golden top dome. And it can be easily seen from various places in Gangtok.

Namgyal Institute of Tibetology

This is one of the famous institutes in the world and has research in the field of Tibetan language and culture. It also has the Tibetan Library which holds the largest number of collection of Tibetan documents and literature all over the world. It is situated at Deorali which is less than 2 km from Gangtok and the institute perched in the forest where a wonderful serene ambiance.

Rumtek Monastery

Rumtek Monastery is situated in Rumtek, a place which is 23kms away from Gangtok which is the opposite mountain. It is the one of the largest in Sikkim. It belongs to the Kargyu sect of Buddhist. It is said that the architecture of the monastery is the one of the best around the world as well as it depicts the original in Tsurpu, Tibet.

Banjhakri Falls

Banjhakri Falls is located in a landscaped park with a forested area at about 7kms from Gangtok. It is very close to Ranka Monastery. There is a footbridge around the park that spreads across some 2-acres of land area with different plants and trees as well as with flowers. It's a quite popular picnic spot and there is a manmade lake where you can do lots of activities such as paddle boating at the lake. At that park, you can see Sikkim’s architecture which visible all across the park.

Gangtok Ropeway

It is the greatest attractions in Gangtok and it should not be missed where can enjoy the double-cable zig back ropeway and operational since December 2003. And each cable car can carry up to 24 passengers.

Bakthang Waterfalls

Bakthang Waterfalls is one of the wonderful waterfalls which is located on the North Sikkim Highway towards Tashi View Point. It is about 3kms from Gangtok town. If you are visiting Tashi Viewpoint, it's worth stopping at this roadside waterfall. And the height of the fall isn't much that makes it so beautiful. One of most wonderful sight is the flowing of waterfalls over a canopy of green creepers.

Tashi View Point

The viewpoint is one of the famous and it is located in Tashi which is about 8kms from Gangtok. The best thing about this place is it offers the stunning sightseeing of Kanchenjunga snow peak on a clear day. Another best things are the view of the sunrise from here is memorable for lifelong as well as you will see the peaks dazzling with changing colors and for that, you must be there before 5 am. Not only the changing colors of peeks, you can also see the Phodong and Labrang monasteries

Himalayan Zoological Park

It is the zoo which is quite unique. It is first of its kind in India where animals are kept in natural habitats. It is parkland that spans across a vast 230 hectares forested land with multiple ranging from 6,500 t0 8,000 feet. The main entrance of Zoo is at finishing point of a short pathway to Ganesh Tok and it is about 6kms distance from Gangtok. Either you can choose the drive or walk. If you choose to walk, it can be a little fairly long time. So it would be better to reserve a car to enjoy and experience the zoo.

Hanuman Tok

The meaning of Tok is a temple. So, it is a temple of Lord Hanuman. This temple is situated at a distance of 11kms from Gangtok and it is an altitude of 7,200 ft, on a road that branches off from Gangtok-Nathula Highway. This place is known for its wonderful serene ambiance which is a viewing place and it offers mesmerizing sightseeing of Kanchenjunga range. Hanuman Tok is the best view of Kanchenjunga in the whole of Gangtok town.
